During my Animal Communication workshops, when I teach people to open the lines of communication between themselves and their pets, one of the things I ask them to do is to call on any spirit animals that are around them to help them with communication to come forward.

Some people already know they have spirit, or power animals. Some have never heard of them. I thought I would tell you how I acquired mine and about the things I have learned about them.

During my life, at different times I’ve gone to workshops and psychic development groups hoping to find the ‘thing’ that I might be good at or able to incorporate into my life. For years I’ve taken part in meditations in these groups where we are invited to meet our spirit animals. Every time the same thing happened over and over. The person leading the meditation would go around the group afterwards asking “What animal did you get?” People would say “A wolf”, “A bear”, “An eagle” and more. They would get to me and I never got any animal come to me in meditation. You know that feeling when you’re the only one who doesn’t get anything? That was me, year after year, after year.

I realise now that there was a key that would unlock whatever was blocking me.

About 2 years before I even knew I was going to have an opportunity to learn Animal Communication I met my friend Jay, a gifted medium, at a psychic fair..  I was in a state of crisis.  I was meant to be doing Tarot card readings but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay, or if I wanted to follow a path of spiritual learning because I never seemed to progress.  I saw Jay and knew I had to talk to her! She talked to me and helped me so much that day.  She gave me her card and told me to come and visit her. I did and she became my mentor and helped me through this time, boosting my confidence and getting me unstuck.

Then several months before I attended the Animal Communication workshop that changed my life forever, I was at a charity event to raise money for a school doing tarot card readings. There I met my friend Susi Jones. As soon as I saw her I KNEW I had to go and talk to her, that there was a significance to this meeting. I went over and we chatted for a while. I asked what she did and she said “Lightwork”. I’d heard of it but didn’t really know anything about it so I asked her what specifically she would do if I went for a session with her. She said she never knows what she’s going to do as she is guided by spirit. I arranged to call her in a few days to make an appointment.

About a week later I visited Susi and she did her guided work on me. She showed me how I could connect with that part of me that resides in spirit and, I don’t know how she did it, but Susi turned the key that changed everything for me. When I got home I kept saying to my partner Mike that whatever Susi had done it had changed me. I couldn’t explain how, I just knew I was different.

I was finally ready

A couple of months later I attended yet another psychic development workshop and we did the inevitable “Meet your spirit animal” meditation. This time a young bear walked up to me during the meditation and introduced herself as Shiloh. She told me she had come to me to help me to remember how to play. I was stunned! I was so excited to finally be able to say that I actually had met my spirit animal!

When I went on the Animal Communication workshop a few months later I knew straight away why everything had happened to me in my life, including meeting Jay, Susi and Shiloh. From that point on Shiloh has always been present in my life and helps me with my communications. When I call her name she gently touches me on the side of my nose. It’s a wonderful feeling to have this companion helping me with my work.

So what is a spirit animal?

If you look online you can find out a lot about what spirit animals are and which specific species are likely to be your spirit animals. But what you won’t often see is that our own pets who have passed over can become our spirit animals and that the role really isn’t restricted to certain species of animal.

I can only tell you what I have learned about them. They have told me that they are souls who have passed over and have chosen to help and guide other souls on this side of life. So Shiloh has chosen to be my guide and helper when I’m in communication with animals.

My other helpers

I have two other helpers and they are both dogs who I have had as part of my family in this lifetime. They are also my spirit animals and they too come forward when I am doing readings. One is my first male Bernese Mountain Dog, Ty. He was my heart dog and my greatest teacher in life and is still teaching me now. The other is our Bernese Lucy who passed over in November 2016. Lucy was an amazing communicator in this life. She was a teacher, participating in all my workshops. I’ve had a room with over 20 people in and they’ve all spoken with Lucy at the same time. She has given them all such consistent answers to their questions that she has blown my mind and the student’s and they have come away knowing that communication is real. She is now using her amazing skills to help me.

Recently I went to an event where we were guided on a meditation to meet our spirit animals. I didn’t expect to meet another, but I did. A polecat called Jenny. I thought I would go online and find out what the polecat as a spirit animal means. I couldn’t find any reference to a polecat so I tried ferret and weasel. Still nothing. So in the end I did the only thing I could do, I asked Jenny.

Here is our conversation

Lucy, my Bernese Mountain Dog who has passed over

Lucy, my Bernese Mountain Dog who has passed over and now also helps me when I speak with animals.

Why did you come to me – “To help you”.

With what? “With your readings”

Tarot or animal communications? – “Neither”

What then? – “With mediumship”

I found this interesting because I don’t want to be a medium but I keep getting pushed this way and have been told it’s because practicing mediumship will make me a stronger animal communicator.  But even though I know that Jenny is there to help me with this I still shy away from it.  I know she’s there if I ever change my mind.

What else can our spirit animals do for us?

We can call on them to help us with things in our lives, so for example when we got our rescue Teddy he was extremely ill. So ill we nearly lost him. I asked Ty and Lucy to please help Teddy to survive and to heal. They are there for us. That is the role they have chosen for themselves and they are always happy when we acknowledge them by calling on them to help.

We all have spirit animals. Some may be pets we’ve had in this lifetime or a previous one. Others may be animals that have chosen to be our helpers in this lifetime. Some may stay with you your whole life, others may only come for a short while.

The one thing I know for sure is that we are blessed to have these beautiful souls walking alongside us, supporting us and being there for us.
